How to Soften Batik Fabric (Make Stiff Cotton Softer)

Do your fabrics feel stiff and scratchy? Are they difficult to work with, and do they seem to resist all of your attempts at softening them? If so, you’re not alone. Many people have this problem with cotton fabrics, especially those that are new or haven’t been washed often.

To soften batik fabric, you can pre-wash it before using the material to rid of the wax completely. Another way is to iron steam the fabric.

In this blog post, we will discuss two methods for softening batik fabric and stiff cotton: soaking and using a fabric softener. We will also provide tips on how to make your fabrics softer in the future!

Why Is Batik Fabric Often Stiff?

Wax Not Completely Removed

If your batik fabric is stiff, it is probably because the wax has not been completely removed from the material.

When batik fabric is made, hot wax is applied to the material in order to create the desired design. If the wax is not removed properly, it will leave the fabric feeling stiff and uncomfortable.

Why Do They Get Harder after Being Worn?

This phenomenon occurs because the dye in the fabric gets absorbed by the fabric’s fibers. Since it is 100% cotton, it naturally absorbs the dye. Upon washing, the paint is released, causing the fabric to take on a new color.

These are some ways to soften them. If your batik fabric is still new and stiff, you might need to boil it first to make sure to get rid of the wax from the material.

To further maintain the softness of the fabric, you need to always iron it after washing it.

Pre-wash Your Batik

Pre-wash your batik means washing it for the first time before using it.

  1. To remove the wax and soften the fabric, you can boil it in water for about 30 minutes. You can also add a cup of vinegar to the water to help remove any remaining wax.
  2. After boiling the fabric, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Avoid using hot water, as this can cause the colors to run.
  3. Avoid using fabric softener since it may contain chemicals and leave residue on the fabric.
  4. If your batik is still stiff, you repeat the process several times.

Use a Steam Iron

  1. First, use a fabric steam iron on high heat, which loosens the fabric fibers as you press the fabric. The fibers become more flexible, resulting in the desired texture and look.
  2. To keep your batik looking its best, it’s best to iron it inside out on the lowest to warm iron setting.
  3. It would be best if you did not iron batik cloth directly. Make sure you iron the fabric over a sheet of paper or a piece that will not rip the batik fabric.
  4. Use the iron to press the fabric for 2 to 5 minutes. This longer pressing time also helps the material retain its shape.
  5. After you press the cloth, iron it again by using a medium climate to flatten the folds of the fabric.
  6. If the fabric still looks stiff when you iron it the second time, use high heat from the iron again. This method makes the material more flexible and recovers its shape.

There are a number of ways to make stiff cotton softer.

  1. One is to add a fabric softener when you wash it.
  2. You can also try soaking it in vinegar or lemon juice for 30 minutes, then rinsing it off and putting it in the dryer on low heat with a fabric softener sheet.
  3. Another way is to soak the cotton in 1/2 cup of salt and 2 gallons of warm water for 30 minutes, then rinse it off and put it in the dryer as above.
  4. You could try adding a cup of white vinegar to your washing machine’s rinse cycle. All of these methods should help to soften stiff cotton.
  5. Finally, if all else fails, you can always try ironing the cotton with a steam setting – this should help to soften it up.
